Overcoming Challenges
Constant Self-Criticism
When your inner voice is your harshest critic
There's a voice in your head that never lets up. It notices every mistake, every flaw, every way you fall short. It's exhausting. And it's lying to you.
The Critic's False Promise
Self-criticism feels productive—like it keeps you in line. But research shows the opposite: self-criticism increases anxiety and decreases motivation. Self-compassion does the opposite.
- You replay mistakes over and over
- You speak to yourself in ways you'd never speak to a friend
- Compliments slide off while criticism sticks
- You feel like you're never quite measuring up
"You deserve the same compassion you so freely give to others."
Cultivating Self-Compassion
Self-compassion isn't self-indulgence. It's treating yourself like someone you care about. It's acknowledging that being human is hard for everyone.
Practice: When the critic speaks, ask: "Would I say this to a friend?" If not, find kinder words.
